A High-School Sweetheart Engagement Proposal with an Irregular Salt and Pepper Diamond Ring
A very unique ring for a special couple.
When you have spent a full decade together, you like to think you know your partner inside and out. Jack and Alice are high-school sweethearts who have shared ten wonderful years building a life together. But when it came to choosing an engagement ring entirely on his own, Jack took a wonderfully brave gamble.
Because Alice is a professional product designer, her eye for detail and design standards are naturally exceptionally high. Most young men take subtle hints from their brides-to-be, sneak a peek at hidden Pinterest boards, or enlist a sister or best friend to help guide the process. Jack, however, flew completely solo and trusted his own instincts because he knows Alice's taste so well. It is a bold approach that I instantly admired—especially after spending the last 20 years as a Wimbledon-based jewellery designer meeting countless partners navigating the proposal puzzle!

The Brief: White Metal and an Irregular Shaped Natural Diamond
Even without Alice's direct input, Jack came to my studio with a refreshingly clear vision. First, he knew she never wears yellow gold, so the metal had to be a crisp white. While we discussed white gold options, we ultimately chose platinum for its bright, permanent white colour, exceptional hardness, and lifelong durability.
Next, Jack wanted to move far away from convention. He wasn't interested in a standard round brilliant cut or the ubiquitous oval shape that dominates the Instagram feed. Instead, he wanted an irregular, one-of-a-kind diamond that felt truly special, styled in a clean, minimalist solitaire setting with that subtle, organic feel signature to my design aesthetic.
The Approach: Sourcing a Rare Salt and Pepper Diamond
Sourcing a classic round brilliant cut diamond is straightforward, but hunting down an irregular, characterful natural diamond requires patience and specialized expertise. Thanks to my long-standing relationships with trusted gem dealers in London's historic Hatton Garden, I managed to source a selection of unique stones matching Jack's precise requirements and budget—ranging from antique old-mine rose cuts to sweeping pear shapes.
Out of the selection, Jack chose a magnificent pentagon-shaped rose cut diamond featuring a gorgeous, natural salt and pepper appearance.
What is a salt and pepper diamond?
Unlike traditional, flawless white diamonds, salt and pepper diamonds contain natural inclusions—tiny dark and white crystals trapped inside the stone over millions of years. These inclusions give the diamond a mesmerising, galaxy-like depth and character, making every single stone entirely unique. No two salt and pepper diamonds look alike, making them the ultimate choice for modern couples who want something individual and artistic.
Once we secured the stone, I sketched several concept designs. Jack settled on a clean, modern bezel setting featuring soft, rounded contours that provided a striking, tactile contrast against the sharp geometric angles of the pentagon diamond.
The Result: A Unique Engagement Ring for a Milestone Proposal
The final result is a stunning, contemporary yet timeless engagement ring featuring a soft, protective bezel setting that hugs the geometric stone. It is just as unique as Jack and Alice's decade-long love story.
True to form, Jack planned an unforgettable proposal during a romantic weekend getaway in Norfolk, dropping to one knee to ask the big question. Needless to say, it was a resounding success!
