Celebrating retirement with a bespoke diamond pendant
After 30 years of hard work, my client had an epiphany. While on a work trip in South Africa, she decided to buy a diamond for herself. Why? Because she was about to retire, and quite frankly, she thoroughly deserved it.
MR has forged a stellar career in the sports industry—athletics, to be precise. It is a demanding profession that has involved long, relentless hours and extensive international travel. While working closely with world-class athletes has brought her an immense sense of pride, standing on the precipice of retirement made her want a tangible, beautiful piece of fine jewellery to reflect her incredible journey.
There is something deeply empowering about a woman buying her own diamonds. It stands as a proud, glittering reflection of her own hard work and how far she has climbed. As I often explore in my journal, women are increasingly buying their own luxury jewellery.

The Design Brief: Subtle Athletic Elegance
I find that when a woman buys her own diamond, she usually knows her mind inside and out. MR was no exception. She came to me with a crystal-clear vision for her self-purchased diamond: she wanted it transformed into a custom pendant set in a cool, silver-coloured metal.
Crucially, she wanted the design to subtly nod to her lifelong career in athletics, but without being overly literal or cliché. Her preferred chain length and metal tone were already predetermined, setting the stage for a wonderfully focused design process.

The Design Approach: From Running Tracks to Sleek Platinum
As a bespoke designer, my job is to listen closely to my clients, offer options tailored directly to their vision, and occasionally go a little "rogue" with alternative ideas to see if we can spark something unexpected.
For MR, we explored several conceptual directions, ranging from Hermes—the Greek mythological messenger associated with athletics—to abstract interpretations of a running track. Because MR’s personal style is sleek, minimalist, and modern, we ultimately agreed on a very clean, refined graphic ode to a traditional track that would cradle her diamond to perfection.
When discussing metals, I walked her through budget and durability options, including 9-carat and 18-carat white gold alongside platinum. Ultimately, she chose platinum for its supreme durability, lasting strength, and bright, luminous white colour that will never fade or require re-plating.
The Crafting Process: 100% British-Made Excellence
As with all my bespoke commissions, the journey of this piece began right here in my Wimbledon workshop. I take immense pride in the fact that every single piece of Militza Ortiz jewellery is 100% British-made.
I work closely with master craftsmen in London’s historic Hatton Garden—the beating heart of the UK jewellery trade—to ensure the casting and stone-setting are executed to the highest possible standard. Once crafted, the pendant was sent to the London Assay Office to be officially hallmarked, providing an absolute guarantee of the platinum's purity.
The Result: A Pendant Ready to Take on the Town
The final creation is a contemporary, understated diamond and platinum pendant necklace with a clean, fluid design that MR absolutely adored. In fact, she loved it so much that she left the studio wearing it immediately, ready to take her new piece straight out on the town to celebrate!
Moments like this are why I love what I do. I truly believe that fine jewellery should be a reflection of who we are. It should bring us joy, empowerment, and self-confidence every single time we put it on—and what better excuse for a bespoke creation than celebrating 30 years of dedication and success?
