Proposing with Just a Loose Diamond or Gemstone: The Ultimate Stress-Free Guide
As a jeweller with over 20 years of experience, I see it all the time: the nail-biting, palm-sweating nerves of choosing the wrong engagement ring. Will they like the style? Will it fit? And that is even before you factor in the dreaded, heart-stopping question: "Will they say yes?"
Proposal anxiety is entirely real. There is a surprising amount that can go wrong when you try to guess your partner's taste entirely on your own. For instance, what if your fiancé-to-be despises platinum and has always secretly dreamed of 18-carat yellow gold, but you accidentally bought 9-carat? Or what if you opt for a classic round diamond when they have secretly been pinning oval and emerald cuts for months?
These are major, high-stakes mistakes. Traditionally, they can only be fixed by awkward conversations, resizing fees, or remaking the ring completely from scratch.
Marry me sweeties for a proposal.
So, what is the ideal solution?
You could propose with a temporary placeholder ring, or lean into a quirky joke like a ring made from a fizzy drink can pull-tab. But here at Militza Ortiz Jewellery, we offer a far more romantic, sophisticated, and practical solution: proposing with a loose diamond or a standalone gemstone.
When you present your partner with a gorgeous presentation box containing a sparkling, loose diamond or a vibrant, hand-selected gemstone, it creates an unforgettable moment. It is tangible, breath-taking, and makes it almost impossible for them to say anything other than a resounding "yes!"
How Proposing with a Loose Stone Works
Choosing to propose this way removes all the guesswork while keeping the romance alive. Here is how we bring the vision to life together at my Wimbledon, South West London studio:
1. Sourcing the Perfect Diamond or Gemstone
I source exceptional, conflict-free diamonds and coloured gemstones tailored precisely to your preferences. You can view and select them in the warm, welcoming environment of my Wimbledon-based jewellery studio.
Working closely with reputable gem dealers in London's historic Hatton Garden, I supply official certificates of authenticity or GIA diamond reports. This guarantees you are getting an ethical, high-quality piece. During your consultation, you can even use my professional jeweller’s loupe to inspect the stone's inner facets and brilliance up close.
2. Beautifully Presented in a Heirloom Box
Your chosen diamond or gemstone will arrive securely nestled inside a gorgeous, vintage-inspired presentation box. It is small enough to safely conceal in your jacket pocket until the exact right moment strikes to drop to one knee, yet sturdy enough to keep your precious stone safe and sound.
We also offer a modern round box made of steel if that is more to your taste.
3. Coming Together to Co-Design the Perfect Engagement Ring
Once you have popped the question and celebrated the good news, you and your partner can return to the studio together. This turns the ring design into a deeply meaningful shared experience.
I provide several initial design sketches for you both to review. Every element can be tweaked, refined, and altered until you are 100% happy with the final concept. Once the design is officially approved, I personally handcraft your bespoke ring.

The Major Benefits of Proposing with a Loose Stone
Choosing this route offers several distinct financial and emotional advantages that traditional ring-shopping simply cannot match:
Complete Budget Control: The central stone usually accounts for a big chunk of an engagement ring's overall cost. By selecting the stone first, you lock in that core budget. Afterward, the style of the setting—whether you choose higher- or lower-carat gold, a diamond halo, or delicate accent stones—determines a considerable amount of remaining cost. You can balance these choices together as a couple.
A Meaningful Shared Milestone: Even though your partner didn't choose the central stone, they get to experience the entire creative journey of designing the physical ring. They have direct input into what goes on their finger, ensuring absolute love for the final piece while keeping the sentimental value entirely intact.
Zero Guesswork and Zero Stress: You no longer have to stress over ring sizes, metal preferences, or silhouette choices. You get to sweep them off their feet with a stunning loose stone, knowing the design phase will be a collaborative breeze.
Do I Have to Propose with a Diamond?
Not at all. While diamonds are the traditional choice, they are far from the only option.
Coloured gemstones—such as deep blue sapphires, vibrant rubies, or rich spinels—make incredible alternatives for modern brides and grooms who want to break away from convention. As long as you choose a hard, durable gemstone that can withstand the rigours of everyday wear (scoring 8 or higher on the Mohs scale), the possibilities are endless.
